GTpB wikiBase information

wikiBase is our name for the integration of two technologies included in portalBase - a wiki and a database.

For those unfamiliar with what a wiki is, it's a type of web site that allows people to easily add, link, and otherwise edit pages of content. The most popular example is the online encyclopedia wikipedia.

A wiki is a very flexible way of storing content but is pretty much unstructured. A database on the other hand is very structured so you can filter, sort, create calculations etc. but not very flexible. Bringing the two together as portalBase does gives you the advantages of both. The wiki benefits of freeform entry and linking are married with the many advantages of a structured database.

In portalBase, a separate wiki page can be associated with every single database record. These can be indexed in the database.

The video linked to above gives an example of wikiBase in use but some other uses we've seen are:

  • Testing notes for a programmer's issue tracking system. Next to each bug or issue, a wiki page records testing procedures and outcomes
  • Client project records. A wiki is ideal for recording detailed notes of client projects, not only as a record of past work but to help educate clients by linking to common concepts such as the Shewhart Cycle, demand levelling, risk appetite etc. In portalBase, these can be indexed by Client in a project management database
